IBS Treatment Specialist in London

Bloating after meals. Cramping that comes and goes without warning. Constipation, diarrhoea, or bowel habits that seem impossible to predict. Symptoms that interfere with work, travel, meals out, or the confidence to leave the house without planning every detail.

For many people, IBS becomes exhausting not only because of the physical symptoms, but because it can be difficult to understand what is really driving them. As a GP and functional medicine doctor based in central London, I take a more detailed approach to persistent IBS symptoms and IBS-like digestive patterns.

I offer face-to-face consultations at Charterhouse Clinic in London W1, as well as video appointments for patients across the UK.

When IBS symptoms start running your life

IBS can affect people in very different ways, but common patterns include:

  • bloating and visible abdominal distension

  • abdominal pain or cramping

  • constipation

  • diarrhoea

  • bowel habits that alternate between both

  • urgency, unpredictability, or discomfort after eating

For many people, these symptoms are also accompanied by fatigue, brain fog, food sensitivity patterns, or a growing sense that digestion is no longer working as it should.

IBS is a pattern, but not always a complete explanation

IBS is a common diagnosis, but it is not the full story. Symptoms such as bloating, abdominal discomfort, constipation, diarrhoea, or unpredictable digestion usually reflect an underlying imbalance that needs proper attention.

In some people, that may involve bacterial overgrowth, food intolerance, altered motility, thyroid imbalance, stress-related gut dysfunction, inflammation, or other digestive factors that deserve more careful interpretation.

Symptoms that often sit alongside IBS

  • gas and bloating

  • abdominal heaviness or discomfort

  • fatigue or low resilience

  • brain fog

  • stress-related worsening

  • food reactivity or a narrowing of the diet over time

My approach to IBS treatment

First, I look at the full story

I begin with a detailed consultation, reviewing your symptoms, bowel pattern, diet, stress, sleep, previous investigations, and the wider context in which the problem has developed.

Then I investigate carefully

Where appropriate, I may recommend further assessment to clarify whether the picture is straightforward IBS or whether there are other contributing factors that need attention.

Then we build a plan around what we find

Depending on your symptoms, this may include dietary changes, gut-focused support, targeted supplementation, further medical investigation, or a broader functional medicine plan.

Ongoing review matters

IBS symptoms often change over time. I review progress carefully and adjust the plan so that it reflects how your body is actually responding.

What I may look at during a deeper IBS assessment

  • digestive function

  • stool testing

  • SIBO or bacterial overgrowth patterns

  • food intolerances or elimination responses where appropriate

  • inflammation

  • thyroid or other overlapping contributors

IBS, stress, gut health, and the wider picture

The gut and the nervous system are closely connected. Stress does not mean symptoms are imaginary, but it can significantly affect motility, sensitivity, inflammation, and flare patterns.

That is why IBS often needs to be understood through a wider gut-brain and whole-body lens, not only through symptom suppression.

Why work with an IBS treatment specialist with a GP and functional medicine perspective

One of the advantages of this approach is that I do not look at digestive symptoms in isolation.

I work from a GP foundation, so I can think clinically about differential diagnosis, investigations, medication, referrals, and wider health context, while also using a functional medicine perspective to explore what may be contributing beneath the IBS pattern itself.

Frequently asked questions

Can IBS-like symptoms have other underlying causes?

1

Yes. In some cases, symptoms that are labelled as IBS can overlap with bacterial overgrowth, food intolerance, altered motility, thyroid issues, or other digestive problems that need closer review.

Do I always need tests for IBS?

2

No. Testing is not always necessary, but when symptoms are persistent, confusing, or not improving, further assessment can sometimes be very useful.

Can IBS affect energy, mood, or brain fog?

3

Yes. Many people with IBS also notice fatigue, low mood, brain fog, or stress-related worsening, especially when symptoms have been ongoing for a long time.

What if I have already tried diet changes?

4

That is very common. Sometimes the issue is not whether you have tried something, but whether the symptom pattern has been interpreted properly and whether the plan truly fits your case.

Do you offer IBS consultations in London and online?

5

Yes. I offer face-to-face appointments in central London and video consultations across the UK.
