thyroid health

These symptoms can significantly affect your quality of life, and they deserve proper investigation — not reassurance that everything is "within range."

Most routine thyroid tests measure only TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). While TSH is a useful starting point, it doesn't tell us how much active thyroid hormone your body is actually producing or using at a cellular level.

In my practice, I assess a more complete thyroid panel, which may include TSH, Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies (TPO and TgAb). This broader picture can reveal autoimmune thyroid conditions like Hashimoto's thyroiditis, conversion problems where T4 isn't being converted to the active T3 form, and nutrient deficiencies — such as low iron, selenium, or zinc — that interfere with thyroid function.

Thyroid Health — When Something Feels Off But Your Tests Come Back "Normal"

One of the most common things I hear from patients with thyroid concerns is this: "My GP said my thyroid test was normal, but I still feel terrible." If that's your experience, I want you to know that your symptoms are real — and that standard testing doesn't always tell the full story. As a GP with a functional medicine approach, I look deeper, because getting the right answers matters.

Could your thyroid be affecting you?

The thyroid is a small gland with an enormous job — it regulates your metabolism, energy, mood, weight, temperature, and much more. When it's not working optimally, the effects can be felt throughout your whole body. Symptoms that may point to a thyroid imbalance include:

  • Persistent fatigue that sleep doesn't fix

  • Unexplained weight gain or difficulty losing weight

  • Feeling cold all the time, or having cold hands and feet

  • Brain fog, poor memory, or difficulty concentrating

  • Low mood, anxiety, or feeling emotionally flat

  • Hair thinning or hair loss

  • Dry skin, brittle nails

  • Irregular periods or fertility concerns

  • Constipation or slow digestion

  • A feeling of puffiness, particularly around the face

Why standard thyroid tests can miss the full picture

My approach to thyroid care

Step 1 — Listen to your whole story. Before we look at any numbers, I want to understand how you're feeling, how long you've been struggling, what makes things better or worse, and what your life looks like day to day. Your experience matters as much as your results.

Step 2 — Comprehensive testing. I'll arrange a thorough thyroid panel alongside other relevant markers — adrenal function, nutrient levels, inflammation — because the thyroid doesn't work in isolation. It's deeply connected to your stress response, gut health, and hormonal balance.

Step 3 — A personalised treatment plan. Depending on what we find, this might include nutritional support, lifestyle adjustments, medication review or optimisation, or targeted supplementation. If you're already on thyroid medication but still not feeling well, I can help review whether your current treatment is truly optimised for you.

Step 4 — Ongoing monitoring and support. Thyroid health is something we manage together over time. I'll check in with you regularly to make sure your plan is working and adjust it as your body changes.

A note on Hashimoto's thyroiditis

Hashimoto's is an autoimmune condition and the most common cause of an underactive thyroid. Yet many patients are never told they have it, because routine tests don't check for the antibodies involved. If you have Hashimoto's, there is so much we can do beyond standard medication — addressing gut health, reducing inflammation through diet, and supporting your immune system can make a meaningful difference to how you feel.
